Roughly 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, according to police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored substance.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then found numerous other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests show the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; authorities are not yet informed of any harm in association with the event," they stated.
City officials stated they were attempting "to solve the incident" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking political figure commented the incident made him without words and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right attack five years ago," he stated on social media, recalling the death of nine individuals by a assailant targeting residents of migrant background in February 2020.
