Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Declaring it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The anticipation surrounding the recent awards show has been intense, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be designing a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the modern wave of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—traits that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible with a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
