Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
