Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category that year
  • Another creative title was excluded in 2019
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
