Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.
Competitors will gain the right to contest particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to review other situations, including:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
